Sisters Lorrison

The Lorrison Sisters quintet became famous in European music halls. Their shows are mentioned in specialized media from the end of the 19th century, such as L’art Lyrique et le music-hall. Journal Independent des cafes-concert.

Their performances went through some of the most renowned venues in Paris and were described as devilish dances with high heels, in addition to delicious English songs not exempt from a certain erotic touch, since they are mentioned with sarcasm as “demi-vierges”.

The critics openly mentioned that their show was a copy of the Barrison Sisters, although they praised that “the copy was better than the original” since the Lorrison girls were themselves a “protest” against the “skinny” Barrisons. Among the epithets to describe them, it was said that they were also fresher, more natural, and more pleasant.

They appeared in Le Figaro’s Shows and Concerts section of 16th June 1897, in Ambassadeurs concert hall. In the brief review of his show, it is mentioned their English origin and some successful song as part of their performance. One of the juiciest mentions about them in the French press is in the 7th August 1900 Gil Blas edition, which refers to them performing every afternoon at the Folies-Bergére and linked to a millionaire gentleman referred to as the “Prince Z”.

The most famous of the Lorrison sisters was Cissy. The National Portrait Gallery identifies her as Mary Ann Lancaster (+1947). As a group, the Lorrison Sisters made several series of postcards, including some very racy ones in swimsuits. Otherwise, they are easily identifiable by their Art Nouveau bows and flowing robes, similar to the see-through nightgowns worn at turn-of-the-century Parisian variety shows.
