5 vintage herbariums (postcards) 1910s
Lot of five 1900s-1910s herbarium postcards 🌿

One of them with at least seven different herbs and a wild violet, and the other 4 with flowers:

• pansies
• carnation
• wild roses
• corn flowers

Provenance: France
Date: 1910s
Material: paper base (postcard) and dry natural flowers and herbs. Ribbon and thread for the herbs
Size: postcard (about 9×14 cm).
Technique: Preserved flowers (dry and pressed), they are sewn (herbs) or partially glued (flowers)
Condition: Used. Fragile antique condition, see pics.

Among the postcards you will find a “campaign herbarium”, made by a military woman (maybe a nurse) in 1916. Her name (Eugénie Gailly) and destination are written in pencil on the back of the cardboard provided to be used as a postcard by the “Service des troupes de Campagne “ In one corner appears the annotation: “Petit souvenir de la campagne”. It is amazing that something so fragile has been preserved for more than 100 years and has been able to survive World War I

Herbariums were very popular with young girls in the 18th and 19th centuries. Parallel to the popularization of the Language of Flowers, many girls created their own collections of dried flowers and herbs, collected as a souvenir of special days or events.
In those days it was customary to create personal journals that included scraps of cloth, preserved flowers, tickets and other small objects as souvenirs. Those Victorian albums are the main antecedents of today’s scrapbooking projects. 🌿
